This film has just won lots of Oscars, which is surely only further proof that they are a complete waste of time, and lack any critical faculties whatsoever.

The King’s Speech is the biggest load of tosh I have ever had the misfortune to endure, in fact I deserve an Oscar for managing to sit through this guff for the duration.

The dialogue in this film is totally unbelievable and I can only assume that the diaries on which they are based were very sparsely written, eg: “Met the king today for a session, went well…” From that the writers have managed to extricate imagined dialogue of the most incredulous kind. This film is a pantomime, it airbrushes over history. Michael Gambon plays George V like a kindly old Freud / Father Christmas character, hardly the autistic, cruel and remote character he was.

The whole premise of this film is nothing more than the worst Royalist propaganda. The sub-plot being: Thank your lucky stars that you got this branch of Royals as rulers, rather than the vain Nazi Edward and his lot. Lets not forget George V was the first monarch to actually speak English, and his cousin Albert ran German prisoner of war camps in the first World War.

I didn’t buy one word of this film, the acting was hammy, especially from the old stalwarts like Gambon and Jacobi. Geoffrey Rush probably put in the best performance, but compared to the rest that’s not saying much.

This film was the worst kind of revisionist propaganda that I have seen in a long time. Made for the sycophantic royalist and American market, if a word of dialogue was true I’ll eat my hat. Historically the royals are a murderous and cruel bunch, their cruelty knows no bounds and is even extended to members of their own family. I see no evidence that this has changed in recent decades, they are not kindly socially conscious people. They are royals who will kill their own to consolidate their power.

If you go and see this film keep your tongue planted firmly in your cheek!

HULL AIR (Burwell’s Pìobaireachd)

David Ellis and Lee Merrill are part of ninety collaborators that have been commissioned by Matt’s Gallery, London, to contribute a film to TAPS: Improvisations with Paul Burwell.

TAPS will be taking place at Dilston Grove, Southwark Park, London on 17th, 18th and 19th of September, 2010.

“The subjects of pibroch music are quite varied but share the common theme of commemorating a specific event. The categories of pibroch include: Laments, Salutes, Gatherings, Rowing. In general, the categories of pibroch do not have distinctive or consistent musical patterns that are characteristic of the category. However pibroch was written for specific events, personages or situations.

Laments are mourning tunes often written for a deceased person of note. Laments were commonly written as a result of families being displaced from their homeland, a practice that was very common after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.

Salutes are tunes that acknowledge a person, event or location. Salutes were often written upon the birth of children or after a visitation to a prominent figure such as a clan chief. Many Salutes have been written to commemorate famous pipers.

Gatherings were tunes written specifically for a clan. These tunes were used to call a clan together by their chief. The tune structure is usually simple so that it could be recognized easily by clan members.

Rowing pibroch were more rhythmic tunes used to encourage rowers while crossing the sea.

Pibroch tunes often have intriguing names such as “Too Long in This Condition”, “The Piper’s Warning to His Master”, “Scarce of Fishing”, “The Unjust Incarceration,” and “The Big Spree”. – from Wikipedia”.

Paul Burwell was infamous for his exuberant fusions of fine-art installation, percussion and explosive performance. He was a staunch advocate of, and passionate participant in, all forms of experimental art. TAPS: Improvisations with Paul Burwell, realised by Anne Bean, Robin Klassnik and Richard Wilson embodies his prolific practice.

Over the course of three days TAPS will combine film, installation and performance, portraying layers of interpretation from more than 80 invited collaborators, in response to Burwell’s poem ‘Adventures in the House of Memory’. The poem arose from improvisations by Anne Bean and Paul Burwell in preparation for William Burroughs’s Final Academy at Ritzy, London in 1982, where improvised words were written on huge sheets of flash paper which were ignited as they were sung.

The poem was the last recorded Burwell work two months before he died in 2007. The body of collaborators have responded to the poem by each creating a short film or audio work as a new collaboration for, about or ‘with’ Burwell.

Fragments of each collaborator’s film or audio work, now make a collective totem in a two screen, one hour composite film interpreted and edited by Anne Bean and Chris Bishop. This resulting work resonates with the poem’s innate episodic chronicles, as slivers interleaf together, and runs continuously throughout each day.

The film is shown as part of a screen installation constructed by Richard Wilson. By adding its own sounds and actions, this structure becomes a part player in the final act of the last evening, during a performance by Ansuman Biswas.

Live performances form another layer of exploration, echoing the sense of inter-connectivity created by the installation. Each performer encompasses a practice that reflects the context and ethos in which Burwell worked, improvising within the framework of the poem, film, installation and space at Dilston Grove. The performances will take place at various times during the event.

A publication with an essay by David Toop and drawings by Paul McCarthy, published by Matt’s Gallery, will be available free to visitors throughout the event.

TAPS is supported by a Legacy: Thinker in Residence Award to Anne Bean. Legacy is a collaboration between the Live Art Development Agency and Tate Research, financially assisted by Arts Council England and the Live Art Development Agency. Legacy acknowledges the outstanding bodies of work of two artists who have influenced the development of the Live Art field by supporting them to think about the legacies of performance in art historical contexts and examine the processes and challenges of archiving live work. What the…!

It’s called ‘Little Doug” (I have no clue why), and researchers are not sure what it is. It was accepted by the Hull Maritime Museum in the UK after (from my understanding) being found by some average people in a completely unintentional way. After hearing about the item, the British Museum agreed to take on the ‘what the hell is it’ investigation in their extensive facilities. Have a look…

On August 24, 2008, in the town of Kingston, England, exhibited a mysterious corpse. The bodies came from animals that are not known and the British Society dubbed “Little Doug”.

The corpse was perfectly preserved and exhibited at Hull’s Maritime Museum. Scientists are scratching their heads to see weirdness in the body. Shape of his head like a horse, but his body is completely different. Even more strange is that he has just like human palms.

Unfortunately, the source of the discovery of the corpse was never widely publicized, causing speculation that the bodies were hoaxes. Maybe one day that information will be widely publicized.

Seeing the corpse, I am reminded of a legendary creature that including into a row of hall of fame Kriptozologi, a creature that terrorized the New Jersey -18th century until the 20th century, namely JERSEY DEVIL.
