For unto us….

Jim Eldon popped in to the Zoo and Logical Times Office on Friday. He was keen to record us a little festive ditty. ‘For unto us a child is born’ is a New / Old Christmas Carol.

Jim was taught the tune by Billy Harrison a fiddler who he met in the 1980’s. Billy had learned the tune from his father and titled it ‘For unto us…’, it had no words as such. Billy was born in 1898 and the tunes he taught Jim and others are thankfully not lost to us.

Apparently Billy knew at least 5 different tunes to ‘Whilst Shepherds watched…’ and Charles Wesley the writer simply paraphrased the St. Luke Gospel. With that in mind, Jim tells me, he went to the only other account of Jesus’ birth in the Bible, St. Matthew for the words you hear in the film.

Seasons greetings one and all!
